2018 Review
Hi all!
The Spring Term of 2018 has been a very exciting one for the York Politics Society, and hopefully for you all too! At the end of February, a new committee was elected, with some YPS diehards still hanging about from the previous committee, but then we also welcomed some new and exciting faces. I am incredibly excited about this new committee as we are a team of hardworking, creative and passionate people that will do a lot of great work with this society during the following twelve months. The positions of Illustrator and Digital Media Officer were unfortunately not filled at the AGM, and new position of Alumni Officer was created soon after the election of the new committee, so please come along to the EGM at the beginning of next term if you are interested in running for these positions and getting more involved with our society!
I am very grateful to be elected President, taking the reins from predecessor, Kieran Nash. Being part of the old committee, I know how hard Kieran and the committee worked to enhance all politics student’s degrees and their university experience. The society took an active and dynamic approach to provide for all their members and did so successfully, setting a very high standard, so a massive thank you for all their dedication. I have no doubt that this current committee will be able to continue this high standard and continue and advance with this dynamic approach.
One of the major events that happened this term was the society’s first trip abroad. Through the company Invasion, the York Politics Society took nearing 70 University of York students to Amsterdam, or Ammy Dammy, as we liked to refer to it thanks to our Social Secretary, Phoebe Van de Berg! We all had a fantastic time exploring the wonders of Amsterdam and going out together on the bar crawls in the evening. The feedback from the trip was overwhelming positive, so the possibility of a trip next year is definitely on the table! Keep an eye out on our social media to see where we will go next!
During the term we also continued with our many varying events. Individual speaker wise, Mary Creagh, Labour MP for Wakefield, delivered a talk to us about a variety of issues, mainly focusing on the environment and her initiatives in government that attempt to make a more sustainable future. We also welcomed Nick de Bois, ex MP for Enfield North, who talked about his book, ‘Confessions of A Recovering MP’, and shared some humorous stories about his time in Parliament. Our Cheese and Wine series over this term continued to be a great success, with turnout to these events continuing to rise and their topics continuously diversifying. Our socials this term were also great fun, with Speed-Friending being a new social which was a great laugh and a good way to make new friends! It will definitely be making a comeback in Freshers next year!
In the Summer Term, we plan to continue providing great events. Cheese and Wine will aim at focusing on revision, covering topics that will help with some modules and our socials will be provide a revision break during the intense exam period. We also plan to do a repeat of the Summer BBQ as it was a great success last year. Depending if the weather is cooperates with us, come and join us in the sun with some free burgers (vegetarian options are available) and free drinks to celebrate the end of exams.
I hope that everyone enjoyed all our events during the Autumn Term and I look forward to see you at more during the Summer Term! I am very excited to work alongside this new committee to organised new events for all, with the aim at enhancing your degree and your university experience overall!
